How ushr works

Ushr (literally "one tenth") is the zakat of agricultural produce, due at harvest rather than yearly. Land watered without cost โ€” by rain, rivers or springs โ€” owes 10% of the produce. Land irrigated with effort and expense, such as tube wells or paid canal water, owes 5%. Where both apply across the season, many scholars use 7.5%.

Most scholars apply a nisab of five wasq (commonly estimated around 653 kg of staple grain), while the position attributed to Imam Abu Hanifa applies ushr to any quantity. Ushr can be paid in produce or its market value. Opinions also differ on deducting harvesting expenses โ€” this tool calculates on the gross figure you enter. Please confirm your final obligation with a qualified scholar.
