How the loan payment (EMI) is calculated

EMI uses the standard reducing-balance formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of monthly payments. The same installment covers more interest early in the loan and more principal later. This fixed monthly payment is called EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) in South Asia and simply the monthly loan payment elsewhere — the formula is identical worldwide.

Tips before taking a loan

Compare the total interest figure, not just the monthly payment — a longer tenure lowers your EMI but can dramatically increase what you pay overall. Try changing the tenure above and watch the total interest line.

Formula used

EMI = P × r × (1+r)n ÷ ((1+r)n − 1)

where P = principal, r = monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 1200), n = number of months.

Frequently asked questions

What is EMI?

EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan. It includes both principal and interest, calculated with the reducing-balance formula used by banks.

Does a longer tenure make a loan cheaper?

No — a longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan, often dramatically.

Is this EMI calculator accurate for bank loans?

It uses the same standard formula banks use, but actual offers may include processing fees, insurance and rate variations, so treat the result as a close estimate.
